Leucoderma

What Is Leucoderma?

Leucoderma is a skin condition where patches of skin lose their color. This occurs when the body’s melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin (the pigment that colors skin and hair), are damaged. These cells can stop working or even die. The terms leucoderma and vitiligo are often used to mean the same thing.

Causes Of Leucoderma

  • Leucoderma can be caused by autoimmune diseases, such as thyroid problems, at some point in life.
  • There are many reasons someone might develop leucoderma, and having a family history increases the chances.
  • Common causes include:
    • Burns: Damage from heat or fire.
    • Injuries: Any trauma to the skin.
    • Cuts: Open wounds that can affect skin color.
    • Psoriasis: A skin condition that causes red, scaly patches.
    • Ulcers: Sores that develop on the skin.
    • Eczema: A condition that makes the skin dry and itchy.
  • Exposure to certain chemicals, like butyl phenol, can also lead to leucoderma.
  • Some medications, including EGFR inhibitors and intralesional steroid injections, may cause skin color changes.
  • Congenital conditions (present at birth) that can cause leucoderma include:
    • Waardenburg syndrome: A genetic disorder affecting skin and hair color.
    • Partial albinism: A condition with reduced pigmentation in some areas.
    • Tuberous sclerosis: A genetic disorder that can cause growths in various organs, including the skin.
    • Piebaldism: A condition causing patches of white skin due to a lack of melanin.

Signs And Symptoms Of Leucoderma?

Many people often search for the best allopathic medicine or the latest treatments for vitiligo and leucoderma, and less attention is given to herbal remedies. However, Ayurvedic medicine for white patches focuses on detailed symptoms and works at the cellular level to address the condition.

When vitiligo spreads quickly, the patches might become itchy, but they rarely cause pain. Vitiligo can also cause hair loss in the affected areas, turning the hair white. In some cases, it may even cause eye color changes, though this is uncommon. Vitiligo can also lead to a condition called uveitis, which is inflammation of the eyes and can affect vision.
